Washington, DC - M3: MC’s, Mics & Metaphors (M3), developed and curated by Tewodross Melchishua, explores the creative power of the lyricism and poetry of hip-hop music through visual imagery. The exhibition captures the force behind hip-hop’s music movement, the phenomenon of the MC (Emcee, rapper) or Master of Ceremonies. M3 gathers a nation-wide group of emerging artists who are highlighting the rapper, and each responding to the theme of the MC or simply a favorite hip-hop verse or song. These visual artists are working in a variety of media, including photography, mixed media, painting, fashion, design, video and animation.

Their work will focus on MCs and hip-hop groups such as Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, Guru and more. Particular emphasis will be on MCs that emerged during what is known as hip hop’s golden era, the 1980’s and 1990’s, but the who will also showcase more contemporary MCs such as Mos Def, Jay-Z and Little Brother, as well as other popular and underground hip hop artists.

The featured visual artists include Derrick (Benetez) Bryant, Ogechi Chieke, Damani K. Diop (Reality), Dissident Display (Adrian Loving & Ayo Okunseinde), Jabari Hall-Smith, Jeff Henriquez, Ann (Sole Sister) Johnson, Hasaan Kirkland, Jati Lindsay, Jeff McCauley, Tewodross Melchishua, Ribqah, Darian Robbins, Kamaria Selam (Crystal Graham), Marcel Taylor, upfromsumdirt (Ron Davis), and Carmen Webber, Sistahs of Harlem (SOH).

M3 is on view at the Gallery at Flashpoint from July 23 – August 29, 2009.

The opening reception, hosted by Asheru, will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2009 from 6-8pm and with music provided by Munch.
